Hair Transplantation History

For those of you who like a little bit of history, you will be interested to learn that hair transplantation started as a study in the early 1800s in Germany.  Dr. Dieffen Bach investigated the transplantation of skin, feather, and hair in animals. However, many hair transplant surgeons agree that the “father of hair transplantation” is actually Dr. Norman Orentreich for his idea of using it for male pattern baldness in the early 1950’s.

Why Am I Losing Hair?

Just like any other condition, there are many reasons that people lose hair.  Hair loss can be a result of three main categories.  These categories are metabolic disorders, physical and emotional stress, and hereditary (genetic background) conditions.

Even though male pattern baldness is the most common case of hair loss in men, there are a variety of reasons why men and women lose their hair.  These include, iron deficiency, thyroid disease, polycystic ovarian syndrome, telogen effluvium (severe shedding of hair) inflammatory diseases, infectious diseases, immune system problems, scalp cancers or growths, scalp injuries from trauma/radiation, and psoriasis.

After four years of undergraduate training at the University of Maryland, Dr. Yousefi finished another four years of medical schooling at the Medical College of Virginia (VCU/MCV) Later, he did his general residency in Michigan to perfect his surgical skills and to achieve the highest standards in aesthetic and cosmetic hair transplant surgery.

Dr. Yousefi then went on to achieve another fellowship in Kentucky in the field of Microsurgery (see Dr. Yousefi’s CV) Dr. Yousefi is proud to combine his experience and training in general surgery, plastic surgery, and microsurgery that are needed to create an excellent, natural, and beautiful result for each and every patient.

Why Does a Hair Transplant Surgeon need to be an Artist as Well?

Hair transplantation is not a mechanical surgery in a way that people cut hair from one area and place it in another area.  Even though surgical skills are necessary to have great outcomes, artistic abilities of a great surgeon are more important to create excellent natural-looking results.  Hair transplantation is NOT like planting trees.  In order to get excellent hair transplantation results, Dr. Yousefi and his staff will consider many factors including how to prepare the grafts, where to place the grafts, how to place the grafts, the angle of the grafts, the depth of the grafts, as well as the number of grafts.  Furthermore, hair characteristics, the unique and individual anatomy of each patient’s head, and facial features, need to be considered in combination with patients’ scalp characteristics. The hair’s density, caliber, curl, and frizz/waviness should be considered when placing grafts in oily or very elastic scalps.

What Happens During the First Interview or Consultation?

Dr. Yousefi himself conducts all of the consultations.  At 600 Hair Club, we do not use sales consultants to “close the deal.”  The only way to make sure that confidentiality, professionalism, ethical standards, and genuine interests of the patients are met is for the doctor who performs the surgery to do the consultation as well.

Even though Dr. Yousefi does all of his consultations personally, they are not rushed and are done in a relaxed confidential environment.  This ensures that the patients get all of their questions answered, gives them a chance to see if they like their doctor, and more importantly for the doctor to see if the patient is a good candidate for hair transplantation, and not to promise unrealistic results.

Dr. Yousefi welcomes and encourages for the spouses or close friends of the patient to attend these consultations so that more questions can be addressed.

How is Hair Transplantation Done?

At 600 Hair Club, all of our surgeries are done in accredited and certified operating rooms.  The patients have the luxury of receiving twilight sedation in addition to local anesthesia if they wish, so that they don’t feel any pain or anxiety.  While the patient is sleepy, all of the numbing is done so that the patient does not feel any more pain and so the doctors can do the maximum number of hairs in one session.  This way, patients do no need to return many times for smaller sessions to complete the transplantation.  This is very financially beneficial for patients, as they would need to pay for anesthesia each time the procedure was performed.  While the patient is sitting and sedated, a strip of hair is removed from the back of the head.  Stitches are places very nicely to close the area.  Since Dr. Yousefi is a board certified plastic surgeon as well, most people will not even be able to see the scar; especially if the head is not shaved.  The roots are then separated while the patient is watching a movie, or listening to music.  Later, all the hair grafts are strategically placed in a special way to give a beautiful and natural looking result.

Where Is the Surgery Done?

It is important to do the surgeries in a safe, clean and relaxed environment, with state of the art equipment, performed by a certified doctor and staff.

Dr. Yousefi is a board certified surgeon who operates only in accredited and certifies surgical centers with certified staff.  Our own surgical center is certified by AAAASF.  Therefore we have the luxury of giving local anesthesia with or without twilight sedation or even general anesthesia if necessary.  Since our facility is certified, we are capable of taking care of complications on site if any are to arise.

Why is it Important to do a Surgery in a Certified Facility?

Dr. Yousefi only performs his surgeries in accredited and certified operating rooms.  Our own surgical center is certified by AAAASF.  These days, more and more places offer oral and/or IV medications to decrease anxiety and discomfort without proper equipments to monitor the patients while they are sedated.  In case of an emergency (anaphylactic allergic reaction to these relaxing medications, or even lidocaine overdose and toxicity) it is obviously beneficial to be in a certified facility so that the resuscitation equipment with trained personnel is available.  It is important to mention that these conditions are rare; however safety comes first at 600 Hair Club.

What is the Difference Between a Graft and Hair?

When a strip of hair is removed from the back of the head, the hair roots are separated from each other and made into small grafts so that they can be planted.  The grafts can be in many different sizes; micrografts, mini grafts, follicular unit grafts, slot grafts, round grafts, and so on.  Some grafts only have one hair root in them, others have 3-5 hairs roots, and others have even more.  In order to create an excellent and naturally beautiful result, Dr. Yousefi combines his years of experience and training in general surgery, plastic surgery, and microsurgery to know which size graft should be planted in which part of the scalp.  In order to have a more dense result we need to increase the number of hairs that are transferred rather than just increasing the number of grafts.  Obviously, a transfer of 1000 grafts that have four hairs in each graft will give a more dense result than a transfer of 1000 grafts that have only one hair per graft.  Therefore, Dr. Yousefi believes that the number of hairs is more important than the number of grafts when considering the result of a good hair transplantation procedure.

How Painful is the Hair Transplantation?

The level of discomfort a patient may have during a hair transplantation procedure varies, depending on the patient’s pain threshold.  Dr. Yousefi operates in only accredited and certified surgical centers.  Therefore, patients are safely given the option of local anesthesia and twilight sedation so that they cannot feel any pain while the strip is being cut or even while placing the grafts on the head.  For aftercare, Dr. Yousefi provides pain medication as needed.

What is the Aftercare of Transplanted Hair?

Even though hair transplantation requires significant experience in surgical skills and artistic abilities, the aftercare is simple.  Dr. Yousefi has step by step written instructions that tell you how to wash and care for the transplanted hairs.  Depending on the number and location of the transplanted hairs, Dr. Yousefi usually recommends taking 2-4 days off from work.

What is a Pre-Operative Visit?

At 600 Hair Club, there are different stages of visits.  After your first or second personal consultation with Dr. Yousefi himself, about 10 days before your scheduled surgery, you will have another visit with the doctor called a pre-op visit.  During this visit, Dr. Yousefi will answer any more questions you may have about the procedure, and prepare you for the surgery.  The instruction package, as well as the list of medications you should stop taking will be given to you.  You will also receive prescriptions for the medications you need to begin taking.  You will sign the consent forms, and all final payments are made during this visit.  Everything is taken care of before the procedure, so that there is no running around or surprise occurrences on the day of.

Is There a Hotel Close by to go to after my Hair Transplantation?

For our out of state or long distance patients, there are many hotels around our surgical center.  There is a hotel right across the street from our surgical center that gives discounts to our patients.  Contact our office for details.
